DOHMH Meeting: NYC Standards for Respectful Care at Birth
Background: The Provider Companion Guide to the NYC Standards for Respectful Care at Birth
A project of the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Community Engagement Group (SRJ-CEG) and the Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit (SRHU) at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC-DOHMH), the New York City Standards for Respectful Care at Birth (NYC Standards) were created to inform, educate and support people giving birth in NYC. The NYC Standards encourage people giving birth in NYC to know their human rights and be active decision-makers in their birthing experiences. The NYC Standards also help medical providers to respect and be aware of their patients’ human rights during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth. The NYC Standards are part of a larger effort within NYC-DOHMH to eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in maternal health, and improve maternal health care and health outcomes for all pregnant and parenting individuals in NYC.
The Provider Companion Guide to the NYC Standards will be a tool to help healthcare providers and administrators integrate the NYC Standards into clinical practice. Two strategic meetings will be planned to facilitate the development of content for the Provider Companion Guide with the input from maternal healthcare experts, administrators, and providers.
