Midwives in New York State are also licensed by the Board of Midwifery, State Education Department.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) assumes a leadership role in the development and promotion of high quality care for women and infants both nationally and internationally (www.midwife.org). The organization is committed to ensuring that certified midwives are provided with sound educational preparation, with continuing education and recertification, and with expanding knowledge through research and quality assurance. Members must adhere to the Standards of Practice for Nurse-Midwifery in accordance with the ACNM philosophy.

Licensed midwives are primary care providers for women for their lifetime. Midwives can perform physical examinations, diagnose and treat common gynecologic problems, prescribe medications, perform minor surgical procedures such as suturing lacerations of childbirth, order diagnostic and laboratory tests, and counsel women regarding family planning and menopause. Many midwives offer information on natural alternatives for womens health and incorporate health teaching as an important component of midwifery gynecologic care.
